• Lecce-Puglia •Mid-afternoon on a street in Lecce—life slows down after lunch. •At Lecce’s public market, the baker gives Awaiting Table students their daily bread. •Lecce offers plenty of people-watching opportunities for the curious. •Even the local canines take it easy during Lecce’s mid-afternoon break. •Lecce is a center for the craft of papier-mâché. Local artisans construct life-size religious statues, still used in Lecce’s churches, where they were a thrifty alternative to more expensive stone or wooden carved figures.. •Basilica S. Giovanni Battista, a few steps from the market, offers a more austere facade that contrasts with Lecce’s other flamboyantly Baroque churches. •An altar in one of Lecce’s historic Baroque churches •At the fishmonger’s shop, a man removes Taranto mussels from their shells. •The facade of Santa Croce portrays myriad figures that recall stories from Lecce’s history. •A puppy welcomes visitors to Lecce’s narrow streets •shop for the day’s fresh produce in Lecce’s public market • During an excursion to Otranto, we usually savor a picnic lunch of homemade sausage sandwiches and Pugliese wine on the pier. • Lecce dog watches the passers-by from the security of a nook, safely out of the way of pedestrians’ feet. •A freshly-made cheese, a fine candidate for the evening’s antipasti platter, hangs in Lecce’s market. •At Lecce’s market local cooks can select just the right variety of tomato for the day’s recipes. •Behind Lecce’s doors, inviting courtyards provide residents with a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets. •Lecce’s sights and people provide plenty of opportunity to enjoy the local scene. •Lecce’s patron saint, St. Oronzo, watches over the city from the top of a column in the main piazza. •Many of Lecce’s Baroque churches were constructed in the 16th century. •Santa Croce’s facade features a fantastic collection of gargoyles. •In Lecce’s center, the Duomo campanile (bell tower) soars above the cathedral and its expansive courtyard.
