Lecce/Puglia

Lecce’s
patron saint, St. Oronzo, watches over the city from the
top of a column in the main piazza. In the 17th century,
he replaced St. Irene as the city’s guardian when
Lecce was spared from the plague, then sweeping across
the region. Lecce celebrates his feast day from 24 to 26
August with fireworks, special illuminations around the
city, and concerts. Of course, special foods are prepared
for the occasion, including an eggplant dish called melanzanata
di Sant’Oronzo.
